Comic Site Rant: The Comiket of Despair

Original Post

First comic of ‘08! It looks kind of bad! It’s not totally horrible, but it’s not totally good, either. I do like Tina’s yandere face in panel 4, though. After reading this comic over and over, I realized that it’s actually just this comic + this comic. Oops. This comic plays up the slowly developing insanity in Tina. Normally she’s a cheerful fangirl with pretty well rounded opinions on things, but if you hung around Rets as much as she does, certainly you’d have instances where you’d crack. Rets, however, is smarter than he looks, and knows how the right time to exit. He should thank his lucky stars he’s not dead on the floor. Yet.

The severe lack of Nagi doujins out of C73 is a problem, though. I let last Comiket off since the show was just beginning, so naturally I assumed there wouldn’t be a good turn out. But now the show is almost over, we are lacking in high quality Nagi porn! What is with the fixation on Hinagiku, huh? Tell me, Japan! Actually, I’m sure Japan would tell me to stop whining and just go over there to buy the things myself. Which I would like to do. Eventually. I may do a comic around that idea for next week, but it’s not really fully planned out, yet. In any case, I am in despair. To console myself I’m downloading older Hayate doujins, hoping they will be of Nagi. It’s fine, but I want stuff that’s FRESH. FRESH, NEW AND WELL DRAWN. Sigh. Comiket, I will take you on. One of these days.

New season has started, and as usual, I’m not watching the first episode of everything like every other blogger. I am a discerning individual, and can tell just from promotional art whether or not a show will be for me or not. My judgment has rarely done me wrong, so I’m fine with not watching everything. I have watched some things though, those two things being Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Rosario + Vampire. I won’t say much here, since I’m reserving my thoughts for a blog post that may or may not happen. I will say that SZS 2 is more of the same except with better animation and the style may be a bit more off-beat and wacky. Rosario + Vampire is a stupid fanservice show, but provided Gonzo doesn’t fuck up the animation, I could watch that for 13 episodes. As of right now currently looking forward to subs of Minami-ke ~okawari~, Gunslinger Girl 2, and the end of Sky Girls (I need to finish my year in review, dammit!)

Before I take off, I’d like to mention a few things. The comic has gotten some press again, this time in the form of the Anime Genesis Podcast, and Aarin’s Blog. Anime Gen declares me webcomic of the year, and Aarin gave me a fairly well thought out and honest review. Thanks to both of them.

That’s it for this week. I head back to school next week, but I’ll try to push out another comic before then. Later!

Squeezing in one last comic before the new year. I like this one quite a bit. It didn’t call for much in the way of backgrounds, but I like how that first panel turned out. Sure, it’s all blue, but that’s because it’s cold! Line art isn’t exactly as I want it, but it never is. Overall I’m quite happy with this one. And yes, no matter what you say, 0nT2 is a true MAN’S ROMANCE.

There’s something of a break right now in terms of anime coming out, but I don’t really mind at all since it gives me something of a chance to catch up with all the DVDs I got for Christmas. I decided to start off with the first volume of Air. I haven’t seen the show in about 2 years, so it’s pretty fresh to me. KyoAni’s work rendered in DVD is lovely, but it’s funny how rough the show looks compared to their current works. Not to say it doesn’t look amazing, because it does, it’s just cool to see how much they’ve improved in such a short time. The first epiosde was beautifully directed, and reminded me of how adorable Misuzu was. Let’s see if the rest of the series is as good. I don’t remember my impressions too well, but I think it’s my favourite out of the KyoAni Key adaptations.

Apparently the last episode of Minami-ke came with a preview for the next series, Minami-ke ~Okawari~ by studio asread (of Shuffle! fame.) I have to say that things look quite promising. I’ve heard that people in certain corners of the internet are already hating on it for some stupid reason. As far as I’m concerned, if the direction and scripting stay somewhat consistent, I don’t mind. And before anyone brings up the fanservice aspect, think back on all the fanservice in Doumo’s Minami-ke. There is quite a lot, even if you don’t realize it. A lot of other series have ended, too. Once I catch the last episodes of Sky Girls and Minami-ke, I’ll do a Year in Review post.

That’s it for 2007. See you all next year~

Original Post

The comic has gone far too long without giving proper exposition to Tina. This was mostly because I just didn’t know what to do with her. I gave my comic a female character for the obvious reasons, but up till now she’s mostly been an accessory to Rets’ rants. I realized a while ago that I was writing her completely wrong. Given she is wish fulfillment I wrote her as a romantic fantasy, which would probably work ok in some romance story. This, however, is clearly not a romance story– it’s a comedy. Thusly, I’ve started to write her as a character in a comedy. She’s supposed to make you laugh as well as Rets, so I’ve began fleshing her wacky fannish habits. Hopefully it’ll be to your liking. I really like the art here, except for panel 2. Rets is all wrong, and Tina is suffering from big head syndrome, but the rest I think is pretty good. In attempt to flesh out Tina some more, the comic takes place in her room rather than Rets’. We’ve seen her place a couple times but up until now it’s not been much but a vast expanse of blue wall. This time we’re treated to a better view of her bed, with its red comforter, pink pillows and, against my better judgment, FMA pillows. There’s also a Kero-chan plush, so it evens out? Also, some horrible 00 poster. She is a girl, after all.

Unfortunately, I’ve not gotten around to watching any anime today. I woke up at around noon and since then all I’ve done is raked leaves, made this comic, and am currently at my grandparents’ house decorating for Christmas. Hopefully when I get back home I’ll be able to catch up on somethings. Watching Cobra has set me back a few episodes on everything, so I’m currently in catch up mode.

I’ll try to get another comic plus some holiday art out by Christmas, and after that I’ll probably go back to one comic a week. As much as I’d love to do two or three a week, I just don’t have the time. I’d also like some time to update my art site, too.

Anyway, I’m out.

Original Post

I had to do something about Minami-ke, even if it is a not very clever penis joke. I kind have something similar written for Ef, but I’m not sure if I want to do it now. Honestly, after reading some entries at The Comics Curmudgeon the writing here just looks even more horrible. I bet if I was a newspaper comic he’d tear me apart. I need to do better. The art here is ok. I used the pencil tool to do most of the shading rather than the pentool. I should keep doing this, since it’s far less restrained than the pentool. Though, sometimes you need control, like with the shadows on the face from the hair, so I still whip out the pentool for that.

Lots of anime related news came in over the past week, mostly in the form of announcements for more seasons of various franchises, those being Haruhi, Zero no Tsukaima and Higurashi. In Haruhi’s case it was just KyoAni being less cryptic (but still rather cryptic), but 0nT and Higurashi being more normal franchises had BS-free announcements. I think Haruhi is a very good show and I am quite excited for a sequel, since the first season really only got totally awesome by the end. I’m also excited for Zero No Tsukaima. I really liked the second series, even if no one else did. It was a fun fanservice romp that never really took itself too seriously, so I look forward to more. I have no opinion on Higurashi, since I’ve never seen it past the opening.

I have one episode left of Cobra. I won’t say much here, since I’ll blog it all once I’m done. What I will say is that it’s a severely underrated show and that everyone should watch it because it’s awesome. Also, to all you people who think old anime is unwatchable, this show looks far better than a lot of the stuff that’s come out over the past 10 years. Gotta love those 80s budgets.

Anyway, I’m out for now.

Thanks for all the feedback last week, really appreciated it!

I’m pretty satisfied with how this turned out. Won’t go into much detial, but I like it. Kind of late to the party with this one, but given Mr. Sevakis’s article stirred up a lot of discussion, I figured I should contribute my own 2 cents, in comic form.

I’m too beat to write anything of note in this space today, so I’m cutting it short. Once the vacation rolls around I’ll have more energy, and try to update something like two times a week.

Comic Site Rant: Crazy Sunshine

Original Post

This script is pretty much 100% true. I’m not sure if /d/ actually did the shitting dick nipples, though. That may be more up gurochan’s alley. Lineart turned out mostly good, with the exception of the last panel. I tried to be a bit ambitious with that one, and it turned out kind of ok. Colouring is good, though the light/shadows in this one are probably a bit too strong. The background is based off a little ramen place down in Porter Square. I forgot to include the cheesy tablecloths and folding chairs. I will next time.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the comic– mainly how to make it better, and make it appeal to more people. This site gets a modest amount of traffic each month, roughly 1000/1500 visits a day and ~10000 unique visitors per month, according to AWstats. It’s nothing impressive, but it’s fine. However, I don’t feel I’m reaching all the people that I’m setting out to please. There are a number of reasons for this, the main ones being quality and quantity. This comic isn’t very good. The art is below average and the writing is less than amateur. On top of that, considering that I only update once a week, just to bring more crap, who’s going to want to read that? Not that I feel you, the reader, has bad taste, this is just my own personal opinion on what I do. Another reason could be that I start internet slap fights with random people and usually end up as the bad guy, but people read what jerks write all the time so I’m not too bothered by that.

Sorry for the two week break there, but a bunch of shit happened all at once, and I just wasn’t able to get the comic out on time. This comic marks the end of my 00 bashing, mostly because I’ve dropped the show and have nothing more to say about it. Originally this comic was going to be super long, but I like it better this way, quick and to the point. The art is pretty bad here, but I think the CG job kind of saves it. I’ll try better next time. Yes, that is Shuuichi Ikeda and Toru Furuya.

Nothing much to say today, but I’d like thank Fakku (18+) for plugging me the other day, giving me many hits and many adsense clicks. Same thanks goes out Hinano. Actually, thanks to any major site for plugging me. Really appreciate it.

Yeah, that’s it. Don’t have much to say, as usual (most of the talking happens on the blog now) so I’ll be off.

Sunrise has finally done it. As of right now, I will not watch any new Gundam show ever again. It’s not so much that Gundam 00 is totally fucking horrible (though there is that, too) but the franchise has strayed so far from what made it good. Everything from the terrible opening and ending tracks to the sickening male character designs just makes me want to puke. It also doesn’t help that it only took 2 episodes for the story to just get fucking boring and bogged down with line upon line of horrid dialogue. So yeah, goodbye Gundam. It’s been fun, but now it’s done. I’ll just stick to old UC series from now on.

Comic Site Rant: Be Forever Yamato

Original Post

It works just as well, if not better without text, too.

A simple one this week, and there’s going to be another simple one next week. Reason being I want to focus on doing some non-comic art for a bit. fun start soon now is always neglected, and I want to flesh it out with some pictures. I always get ideas, but I never find to time to put them to paper past very rough planning sketches. As you can see, I just updated the art site with some (slightly NSFW) Halloween-themed art. There’s also a wallpaper of it.

I just finished Yamato 2, and overall I felt it was a big step above the previous series. The only real bad parts were how near the beginning the Yamato was just owning entire battleships with one shot (lol, Jesus Yamato) and the ending. By the end it seems they wanted to stick as close as possible to the end of the movie version, just with less people dying. Because of this, they kind of write themselves into a corner, then bring out a magical Deux Ex Machina to save the day. I came to like Dessler a lot more in this series. He seemed kind of lame in the first one, but he really came into his own as a True Anime Badass in this one, truly deserving of this song. Now, all I have to do is finish Rocket Girls, then move on to Yamamoto Yoko, and then finally finish off Planetes. After that, I think I would have had enough of spaceships, so I think I’ll move on to re-watching some old sexy comedies. HiMM and Shuffle! are far overdue for a good re-watch…

That’s it for this week. Catch you guys again later.

Comic Site Rant: You Get to Burning

Original Post

This comic seems pretty lame looking at it now, but whatever. I wanted to give Tina a hint of insanity to balance out all the wish fulfillment. Then again, some guys get off to yanderes. I guess I’m one of them. Oops. The line art here was pretty horrible, but the colouring saves it, I think. For once there is no crazy lighting effects, so I focused on making darkness look as pretty as possible. I like how it turned out.

I watched 8 episodes of Nadesico with my friend Seiya this weekend. Since I had never seen the show, he took it upon himself to screen some of it for me. I like it, but watching a bunch of episodes all at once makes it come off as very fast, and almost rushed. The episodes are briskly paced, and I feel better suited for watching one at a time, with at least a day (or like, an hour or so) between episodes. That and I’m not very good with marathons. Lack of attention span and all that. But hey, I’ve been listening to YOU GET TO BURNING all day, so that means something.

The specifics for Gunslinger Girl season 2 have been released, and the production staff, seiyuu, and even the studio are completely different from the original series. This isn’t totally bad, as it’s been left to some talented individuals. My only problem is that it’ll feel like a completely different show. Even though Genshiken changed studios 3 times, the vocal cast stayed the same, giving the show some sense of continuity. Since even the voices have changed, it’ll be interesting to see how it works out. Guess it’s good that I haven’t seen the first one for a while?

Anyway, that’s it. This day has been kind of bad, so I just wanna relax for the remaining hour of the day to some animes. Later.

The site was down for about 72 hours earlier this week. I am not sure what exactly caused this, but my guess it was just problems getting the new system up and running. Things seems more or less stable now, so I’m assuming there is nothing more to worry about. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not sure if I did on the main page: visit this blog when the site is having server troubles. I used a tablet to make the backgrounds in this comic. I only just found out my school lets me borrow them for 24 hours, at the low, low price of my ID. While I’m not super good at it now, it was nice and easy to use. Probably faster than using a mouse, too. I think the drawing surface would benefit from having some degree of friction. Anyone know if they make tablets like that? I may need to get one of these. For the mean time though I’ll keep renting them out of the library.

God, Geneon going down feels like such old news now. Well, people are still talking about it, so I guess wasn’t too late to the boat. Gurren Lagann end and School Days end comics coming soon.

The fall season has started, but it sure doesn’t feel like that to me. As far as I’m concerned, the new season doesn’t start until either Genshiken 2 or Kodomo no Jikan start. That said, I’ve seen Dragonaut and have a sub of Clannad on deck. I’ve only seen Dragonaut raw so far. It’s ok. The story and stuff seems to be awfully cliche, but the animation is of a high standard (if not a bit bland.) The main draw from me is the character design. While I don’t really like well-endowed girls (Kotonoha is about as big as I go) Uno Makoto just does them so well. It also helps that this hot onee-san is voiced by mai waifu :3. I was going to hold off for the 16:9 airing of Clannad, but then I’ll miss all the discussion. Why can’t it air in 16:9 right of the bat? Fucking pan and scan

Gurren Lagann recently ended, and it was fucking incredible. I’m kind of the midst of writing a review which may not ever see the light of day. Also working on a post that’ll briefly talk about the ends of Darker Than Black, Zero no Tsukaima and Gurren Lagann, once I’m done shopping this image I need for it. But yeah, if you didn’t like Gurren Lagann you’re not a man. Or something. That was a manly ending.

Alright, I gotta return this tablet before they beat me to death. I’ll catch you wackos later.

Funny I finish this comic right as Geneon’s Nice Boat sinks. Ok, that was horribly forced. Anyway, this comic is a cheapshot, as usual. This should have gone up when I got my first Black Lagoon DVD, but I guess it took me a while to notice the subtitles in the opening. I forgot how bad those lyrics were. I kinda like the art. I wanted to make the colours a little muted, and I think it works to some degree. Expect a comic about Geneon’s TRAGIC DEMISE soon.

Not much to say. I watched 6 episodes of Pani Poni Dash last night at MIT, which is a true test of Otaku endurance. I may do an individual post about the entire screening later, but I’ll just say now that my energy gave out around the fourth episode. That show is exhausting. Also, I think I’m the only one who gets some of the sight gags, as I’m sure I’m the only guy laughing sometimes…

I got the rest of School Days on deck. I may just finish it all today. I need to see this sick ending everyone is on about.

So, with that, I am off.

I bitched about Aoi House a long while back. I think I complained about how it was unrealistic portrayal of anime fans, or some shit like that. Well, I am a fucking hypocrite. I mean, at first Tina looked kinda dumpy, which would be normal for any anime fan. Now look at her. My logic was, if she’s wish-fulfillment, I might as well fulfill some wishes. So after a while I started dolling her up. Played with various looks and styles, until she became the ultimate moe-machine, at least in my eyes. Of course, I have many different kinds of ideas of moe (most of which involve girls being under the age of 13…) Tina’s look appeals to the moe in me that likes girls like Mikuru (or maybe I’m just getting thrown off by the chest) and her personality is very much one of a girl who I would like to have by my side. Well, I guess she could stand to have more of Konata-ness to her. This however depresses me. My shameless wish-fulfillment robs me of any artistic integrity I may have had. It’s shameless, and I hate myself for it. Despite that though, the penis wins this battle, and I’ll continue to make Tina as unrealistic as possible! Huzzah! Actually, please share with me your thoughts on my shameless wish-fulfillment in the comments section. I’d like to hear what you guys think.

Now to the actual comic. I think everything came out pretty well. I had hard time nailing the Zetsubou Sensei style, but I got it in the end. I hope my utter copying of the screencaps counts as fair use, since they’re in the context of a parody.

There is a new podcast. It’s Otakon chatter, which I finally got around to editing. I’m not as good as Patrick Macias when it comes to this kind of thing, but I think it turned out pretty good. This is the final podcast of SEASON 1. The reason I’m closing this one off is because while there are good episodes, it’s kind of a low qualtiy production all around. It was a good way for me to learn the ropes of podcasting, and I hope to apply those lessons in the new podcast, Mistakes of Youth: BEYOND THE TIME. Look out for it~

I would write more, but I don’t fucking feel like it. As you can tell from the lack of updates on the blog, school has been kicking my fucking ass. I’m going to try to see if I can drop one class to make it kick my ass less. Three studio classes are just too much…

Anyway, until next time~

It happened kind of like this.

[22:42:56] Tatsujin: wah you should totally translate that one into Japanese for laughs
[22:43:09] wildarmsheero: if I knew Japanese

After that the guys who knew Japanese in the channel started translating it out of bordom. Here is Shingo’s translation (of the Heisei Democracy), and here is kransom’s translation (of Welcome Datacomp). Ransom’s translation isn’t very accurate at all, but I feel it really captures the spirit of the comic. And by that, I mean it’s almost all written in 2ch slang. As near as I can tell, anyway. I’ve always considered finding some way to get the comic in Japanese, but I doubt it’d garner much of a readership (according to Google Analytics I have all of 6 readers in Japan), and it’d just make me look like more of a Japanophile anyway. On to the comic itself, I’m mostly happy with the artwork. The only really problem is Rets’ hueg head in panel 3, and the layout for the last two panels. I mostly like the panel layout up to that point, but after that it looks lazy. The thing is, I wanted to put emphasis on those two images, and shrinking them so they’d fit better into the layout would lessen their impact. Who knows, maybe that abrasive panel layout helps emphasize them more. I’ll talk it over with Scott McCloud… You probably won’t get this joke if you aren’t familiar with the current slew of Hayate no Gotoku doujin coming out (it seems to be all Hinagiku…) and Japanese p2p programs with their fake files (lord knows how many times I tried to get a Kanon episode off Winny only for it to be an episode of Naruto or amateur porn.) Share works a little better for me with respect to fake files, but kransom reports often getting scat or viruses. Hence the punch line. This is probably a part 1 of 2.

You know maybe I should get a constant job instead of always worrying about running out of money to spend on useless crap. But enough about that, on to the comic. This is kind of extension of what I was trying to do here, but pulled off better. I was going for the Shinkai look with the sunset, and tried to pull off some neat angles. Panels 2 and 3 didn’t come out as striking as I wanted them too, but the last two turned out a little better than I had originally envisioned, so it all works out in the end. I’m trying to pump as much moe as I can out of Tina lately. I like the design of her shirt, but the skirt is a little on the eh side. Overall she kind of looks like cake, but that’s fine. The writing sounds a bit too much like an advertisement, but I find it hard to make these exchanges sound natural. Maybe because they aren’t Oh well. I promise the next comic is better. This comic is pretty terrible. Well, the art is anyway. The joke is fine, I suppose. I don’t see anything wrong with it. Pretty true to life, except for the fact that I’ll be quiting my own job in a day. The drawings are all wrong here, and the backgrounds are pretty bad. I’m not good with things like stores, since they demand a lot of things that look different. Me, being lazy just decided to make everything the same. Yeah, that entire aisle is cans. Cans of what? Who knows… I do kind of like the opening shot. Can you all tell that’s meant to be a fish-eye from the shelf?  I’ll really try to make the next one better, I promise.

I don’t have much to say past this. I haven’t watched any anime today, as I’ve spent all day on this, or putting up 10 Megami posters (just got 88, lots of nice posters.) In my final weeks before school, I’ll try to update the site a bit– update the character section with better drawings, add an introduction, update the reference guide, and some other things. I’ll also try to completely overhaul my artsite and edit up the Otakon podcast.

So yeah, that’s it, later.

I actually finished this about a week ago, but didn’t want to post it right off the heels of the last comic, so I decided to wait. Not sure how fresh the news is now, but it’s not a month old or anything, so I feel posting about it is relevant. For those who don’t have the slightest idea as to what the comic is about or what I’m talking about, kindly make your way over here.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a pretty spectacular just two episodes in. It bleeds with the sexiest brand of negativity I’ve ever seen. I love it! I simply love it! Also, Shinbo’s direction is as experimental as ever. This is probably his best work already. I may actually start blogging it episode by episode and be a true blue cliche anime blogger! Hurrah! Ugh.

Gurren Lagann 16 was all recap. Nothing in the way of newly recorded lines or anything which left me a bit cold. It just felt like a long music video. The ending sequence with all the concept art was real nice though, and the post timejump footage looks promising. I’d really like some of that concept art in an artbook. Here’s hoping.

Ok, that’s all for today. Got some stuff to do. STUFF.

The joke here is rather cliche, but I enjoy the over the top presentation. Also, it’s a Death Note parody, mostly parodying the anime. I think the art turned out better than expected. Would have liked prettier/more of Tina though, but the nature of the comic lent itself to showing Rets more, so I did. Also, here’s the podcast I forgot the upload last week. It’s kinda super old now, as we talk about Gurren Lagann from the point of view of ep 10! Chances are I’ll be recording with another guy about episode 15 and other things.

I would write more but I’m gonna write about that new awesome Shinbo show on the blog.

Original Post

Was kind of bored so I just decided to post this comic up. It’s my generic Gundam ranting, with fairly uninpsired artwork. I didn’t really have any ideas at the time, but wanted to make a comic, so I did this. It’s ok, I guess.

Oh, a podcast happened.

Been watching the Tenchi TV series lately, while neglecting new anime like Bokura No and Seirei, because quite frankly I’m not interested in either of them. I miss the look of these old 90s cel productions. They have a certain quality to them that I really dig. Kind of sad that cel animation was dumped right as they perfected it. My favourite part thus far has been the episodes devoted to Kiyone, given she is my most favourite character. The others are quite good and funny, but those Kiyone-centric ones give me warm fuzzies. She was the first 2D girl I feel in love with, after all.

Aside from watching old shows from the mid-90s, I watched Lucky Star episode 12 today. Highlights being the entire Comike part (especially with Tomokazu Sugita’s cameo) and the really surprising Godman reference right at the end. Funny stuff.

Ok, another short one this week. I have like 5000 blog posts planned out, but no time to write them.

Items I’d like to get to:

  • Death Note Review
  • Mid-season evaluation
  • Directing in anime
  • Why I love 2D girls

Anyway, that’s all for today.

This comic isn’t very funny. It’s just me saying Gundam 00 will suck. Again. But the art is pretty so that makes up for it. Also, I think I’m making some kind of hamfisted point by having Ideon and original Gundam posters in the background but I’m not sure what exactly that point is yet. I don’t have a solid idea for next week yet which is troubling. Maybe I’ll talk about the Bokura No director, or mock Xenoglossia, or talk about Gurren Lagann. I dunno. Oh yeah, got a bit of fanart. It can be found here.

Original Post and Comic

This comic is pretty good. A lot better than the last one. The only problems are probably the last panel, which is a touch sloppy and Rets’ eyes in panel 3. Overall I’m very happy with it. Not sure if people will get the joke right away… or at all.

A podcast is in the works. I need to edit it down so it doesn’t seem like there was a lot of lag (because there was wireless arg.) Also I just registered for Otakon. Anyone want to do a Mistakes of Youth meetup? If so please leave a comment on this entry and we’ll see about organising something.

I think I almost have a job. Maybe. I’d like to secure something soon and start making money for Otakon 2007. I plan to clean Hendane of its CCS doujins, among a few other series.

Another short rant, but I don’t have much to talk about. Blogging has sucked most rant topics away for the time being.

This comic is drawn fucking horribly. I kind of did it in a rush after the Kodomo no Jikan stuff happened. I actually had another comic (about AX) sketched out, but I really had to do something about this. Expect the comic about AX on Saturday. Talking of Kodomo no Jikan, some friends of mine have taken up translating it, and I’m typesetting for them. Expect chapter 6 soon.
