Daryl Surat lays down the law on Macross Frontier as I sit down and listen because I don’t know anything about Macross at all! Also, I was podcasting from a secret location, constantly afraid of a security guard breaking in and arresting me for communicating with terrorists.

Actually the whole point of this was just getting Surat on so I could use AWO’s thoughtbird. I didn’t even like Macross Frontier that much!

Politics

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Election Day is in just under a week now, so vote for freedom and the American way. Vote Obama.

Here’s some great PSAs by the good people down at For Tax Reasons. Check out all their cool videos if you get a chance!

No anime talk today since I haven’t watched anything. After a shower I’ll probably watch either Toradora or Cobra. Or both.

THIS JUST IN: OTAKU DEMAND TO MARRY 2D GIRLS

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

That’s right, folks! It could happen!

I don’t really care either way, though. It’s a lot cooler to be swingin’ single in both the 2D and 3D worlds. I mean, seriously. Marriage is such a drag.

Nico Nico Douga culture and its effect on anime openings

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Oh no– don’t let the title give you the wrong idea. This won’t be some long, drawn out essay. This is just something I’ve noticed.

It seems this season some shows are looking back at the fanbase for certain amounts of inspiration. Rather, the people who make these things are probably fans themselves. Openings in particular have been stellar, and some of the best pieces are those that draw upon Nico Nico Douga for inspiration. The Kannagi opening is reminiscent of a Miku video, Rosario + Vampire Capu 2′s opening is a clear homage to iDOLM@S videos, and both Jigoku Shoujo season 3 and Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei have very MAD movie inspired opening numbers.

This dialogue between fans and creators is really cool. It’s nothing new to anime, though– it’s been happening since the 1980s with things like Project Ako– but the advent of new internet culture gives creators more wacky things to make reference to. I mean, look at Pani Poni Dash– the understanding of most of those sight gags and such is dependent on knowledge of Japanese internet culture.

These kinds of references also put the creators on a more personal level with the fans. When referencing anime, you’re referencing something else that another creator at your same level has made. However, when referencing an internet meme, you’re putting yourself on the same level as an average fan, telling them, “yeah, we’re just like you.”

I just think that’s neat.

A most pressing question

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

I really like the Eva-styled graph here. The Engrish makes it complete.

This episode also had references to Gold Lightan and other things.

Then this happens.

This show is ridiculous.

Webcomics

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Despite being a webcomic creator, I hate most webcomics. Hell, I hate my own webcomic. Webcomics are, for the most part, the stupid little doodles people come up with when they’re bored. The only reason why they’re put up on the internet is because it’s just so easy to put stuff up on the internet these days. As such, the signal to noise ratio is pretty bad. However, I do read some webcomics.

Over the years the number of webcomics I follow has dwindled, due to either a) the comics themselves just fizzling out, or b) me losing interest. Here are a few that have survived up till now in no particular order.

Penny Arcade

Penny Arcade was the first webcomic I ever read. I came to know about it through the few issues of Playstation magazine I had lying around. I remember liking the artwork, but it took me a while to actually make my way to the site. Once I finally decided to visit the site, it took me about three weeks to charge through the archive on a weak dial up connection.

Penny Arcade is a great comic. I don’t even play video games, but I tend to find most of their work hilarious. Tycho is an utter genius when it comes to comedic writing and Gabe delivers a solid art style that resembles the few American cartoons I actually like. They’ve had periods that haven’t been all too hot, but for the most part their archive is solid.

Megatokyo

I honestly have no idea why I still follow Megatokyo. Apparently it has some kind of story, but I am completely in the dark as to what it is and who any of the characters are beyond Piro and Largo. Furthermore, Fred’s style is pretty bad. In a way it’s an interesting twist on what people consider “manga” but most times it just looks lazy. Nice buildings, though.

Megatokyo was probably the second webcomic I ever read. To be honest, I’m one of those people who really liked the early four panel strips. They weren’t laugh-out-loud funny, but they were charming pieces that tickled the funnybone of my 13-year-old Japanophile self. If it had continued along that vein, I probably would have liked it a lot better.

Real Life

I’m not entirely sure how I came upon Greg Dean’s Real Life. It was probably though Mac Hall. Anyways, I used to really like Real Life. Its humour was always extremely stupid but it made me laugh. Recently Greg’s been really playing up “real life” aspect of his comic by just making strips that are terribly boring. Though, his newest storyline is pretty funny, in a dumb way. He should just keep doing things like that.

Mac Hall

Mac Hall is no longer around, but I have to mention it. Mac Hall is, undoubtedly, my most favourite webcomic. In fact, it’s probably one of my most favourite things– full stop. When I was in highschool, Mac Hall provided me with a depiction of college life that appealed to my geekish sensibilities. It was the kind of college experience I wanted. Yes– nostalgia does play a bit into this, but even when I go back and read a random Mac Hall comic, I still find it to be very good.

Ian’s art was probably at its best when he was into the thick, wavy linework and shiny colouring. However, his lines-free style looked great after perfected it. Mac Hall’s artwork also influenced mine greatly. In fact, my colouring style is based off of one of Ian’s very old colouring tutorials. As for the writing, I didn’t really get half of Matt’s jokes when I was in HS, but upon re-reading them, they all suddenly struck a chord with me. Funny how that works.

Three Panel Soul

3PS is Mac Hall all grown up. Being all grown up, it’s less exciting than Mac Hall, but still a good comic. Once again, I can only get into Matt’s scripts half of the time, but Ian’s art is constantly great. Maybe once I’m out of college I’ll appreciate 3PS more.

TGSA Comic

TGSA Comic is by Kimmo “Blastwave” Lemetti and some guy called Pulsar. The writing ranges from average to hilarious, and Lemetti’s artwork is always good, be it simple or extremely detailed. I think it could be very good if the writing was tightened up a bit.

Gone With The Blastwave

I love Gone With The Blastwave. It never, ever, updates, but just looking at it is an experience. Lemetti’s artwork here is always incredible, and the humour is deliciously dark. I should buy his book!

VG Cats

VG Cats updates so rarely that I often forget I read it. Scott’s writing is usually pretty funny, and the art is polished but uninteresting. The only thing that really bothers me about this one is that Scott’s taste in anime is terrible. And furries. Ugh.

Tsunami Channel

A long time ago one of my friends linked this to me, but I didn’t read it since I was on dial up. It was only when Tsunami Channel linked my own comic that I decided to go back and read through their archive. Akira’s an actual Japanese person so his artwork is pretty authentic “manga” stuff and tends to look good. The writing is typical, and is kind of hurt by Akira’s command over the English language, but generally I like it. In fact, this comic is what I wish Megatokyo was.

Wow, nine comics. That’s more than I thought. But three of them never update, so maybe that’s why I thought the number was lower.

Oh wait! I forgot one!

Mistakes of Youth

I do read my own comic. In fact, I read each comic many times which is why I end up hating all of them. My art is horrible, and my writing is even worse. I’ve been trying my best to improve on my art, but it never goes anywhere. I’m a talentless hack, and I have no idea why I put out this shitty shit webcomic.

Original Post

Personally, I have no problem with Kannagi’s Nagi. She’s not as good as The Real One, but is still decently cute. I retooled this script a lot until it got to the point where it sounded somewhat natural. One decision I’ve made with this comic recently is that I want the scripts to be a little slice-of-life-ish. Of course this is no excuse not to be funny, but instead of trying to make heavy hitting, Penny Arcade style things, I’m going to try for more subtle and… insightful things. Or just write potential excerpts of conversations that real anime fans would have. I don’t know– maybe that’s not exciting, but I write what I know! Well, kind of. I don’t know girls, so that’s kind of lie when it comes to Tina.

The artwork this time around is most certainly better than last week’s abortion, but it’s not great either. Rets’ face in panel two is a bit too fucked up for even him. My favourite part of this comic is probably the first panel which features a screencap from the Most Awesome Game Ever. On that note, I have newfound respect for gaming comics. Drawing hands holding controllers is the most difficult thing in the world. Oh, and I guess another thing I should mention is that Tina’s outfit is totally lifted from Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu. I feel no shame! No shame!

Lately I’ve been working on another comic project independent of this one. It’s for a friend of mine’s anime club, and I’m roughly half way through. For this I’m actually laying out panels on a page as opposed to arranging illustrations into panels on the computer like I do with this comic. It’s different, but good. The comic is mostly good, and the only real horrible portion is one panel on page 5 which I will “fix in post” as they say in the movies. I don’t really know the details for his anime club, because he hasn’t really given them to me. Once he does I’ll post them up here so, if you’re in the area, you can stop by and buy this comic. If you want, of course. It should be really cheap. Three bucks or something.

One last site related thing I should mention is this Fakku (18+) plug. Thanks Jacob! I got almost 10 times my normal amount of visits when this link first went up. I know not everyone will stick around, but out of 17,000 visits, I’m sure at least some of them will stay! It’s weird though. I believe Fakku linked me once in the past, but that time I didn’t get nearly this amount of traffic. Maybe their userbase significantly expanded or something.

I’ve been watching Windy Tales at MIT over the past month or so. A first I didn’t really like the show, mostly because it felt awkward. Awkward in the sense that the second episode has a character death. Character deaths in general aren’t weird, but this is a show that presents itself as some slice of life sort of thing, and in episode 2 this random old guy dies? Huh? But after that, it finds its way and becomes a nice slice of life show with a flying cats and kids that can control wind. It’s not as good as Kamichu– the characters aren’t nearly as good– but it’s good fun. On that note, I should watch Kamichu again. Eventually.

To Aru Majutsu no Index, which started off well, is already becoming weak. I like it in theory, but the last two episodes have been far too slow paced. The content of the show isn’t problematic, but it’s just too slow. Hopefully it’ll pick up, because I don’t want to drop this. Another show which really sucks, and I have dropped, is Hyakko. This is another case where I think the content has potential, but dear god, the pacing is horrible. It’s directed in the most uninteresting way ever. What’s more, the animation kind of sucks and the production team can’t even be arsed to make a real opening and ending sequence. Lame.

But enough about bad and potentially bad shows– on to good shows! Casshern Sins is great, even if it is just about a guy in a ridiculous costume wandering around in a brilliantly designed post apocalyptic world and occasionally kicking robot ass. My only concern with this one is that I’m afraid it’ll be unable to hold my interest. The first three episodes have been great, but they have, what, 22 left to go? I hope they mix things up in further episodes.

Toradora! has also been impressing me. One thing I keep hearing about this show is, “thank god this isn’t another Zero no Tsukaima.” These comments bother me, since Zero no Tsukaima doesn’t try to be like Toradora! at all. 0nT is about flashing tits, ass and delicious flat chests while also satisfying your tsundere fetish. That’s what it’s about. It’s a candy bar, but it’s Godiva brand. Or a Toblerone. It’s disposable but you eat it again and again because it’s just so well done. Shit, I love Toblerones. Anyway, Toradora!– I will admit it’s something of a refreshing change for Rie Kugimiya, and I really like the dynamic between the characters. There’s also a nice degree of realism present. I’m not saying real highschool students act like this, but the portrayal of these characters is really down to Earth and has something of an exaggerated realism, if that makes sense. Simply put, I find the their situation to be very engaging, funny and believable.

That’ll be it for this week. Aside from watching anime, I have a busy weekend filled with making comics, editing a podcast with a most dangerous guest, and doing Japanese homework! The fun never stops! I haven’t even had breakfast yet! To Starbucks!
