I need the new Megami

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Man, they’re seriously catering to the lolicon otaku in this one. Other highlighs include Lucky Star, Shugo Chara, Yotsunoha (the anime sucks but I’ll be damned if Nono isn’t a totally cute design), Kyouran Kazoku Nikki and Zero no Tsukaima. I’d love to have it, since my walls are stuck in mid-2007, but I really have no money right now. Also, not like I’d be able to put up this Murasaki one, since I’m living with my parents. My 3 or 4 Kodomo no Jikan posters are bad enough…

Once I start work I should just get that year-long Megami subscription with my first paycheck…

Three blog entries for the price of one! While reading off these titles, I want you to imagine them on Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei styled title-card illustrations. Hell, here’s some BGM while you’re at it!

———-

Dear Japan please be like normal people and write “HOW TO USE” guides for things that aren’t notebooks of doom, thanks

Unless you’re a totally new reader to this silly and horrible internet journal of terrors (hi!) then you’ll know that I have something of an affinity for bishoujo dakimakura covers. They’re wonderful little things in that they allow us lonely geeks to feel loved by girls, who in our mind, CARE, unlike the cold-hearted-serpent-women of the real world. Due to the nature of these things and how often they’re used, chances are they should be washed almost as often as your normal bedsheets and the like. Most commercial pillowcases come with an info-card, usually giving you the material it’s made out of and sometimes even washing instructions. For the most part, these can all be dumped into the washing machine and be taken care of on the delicate settings. Limited, event-only covers are another story, though.

It’s a psychological problem more than anything else. My two Kaede pillows, both event-limited items won through heated battles on Yahoo auctions don’t come with these handy info-cards. Sure, if you put them in the wash they’d probably come out just fine (and they’d probably stop smelling just like me) but they could also come out as white sheets like what happened to one of the guys in this thread.

The Internet Itself (read: Cortana) has told me that hand-washing is the safest bet, and I’m inclined to agree with him. I’ll probably do just that today! But seriously Japan– INSTRUCTIONS. You, better than anyone else, should know just how passionately us otaku use these things.

Edit: I looked on the inside of this one after hand-washing it and noticed there was a little tag on the inside that said it was 100% polyester and machine washable. lol. I’ll throw it in the machine next time, then. Not sure about the other one, but I’m sure the machine wouldn’t hurt it either… I guess I’ll actually wash these often then woo!

I think child porn is horrible but don’t take away my LO

You’ve heard this all before, but news makes it worth mentioning again. Ok, so Japan has no law against the possession of child porn. Yeah, that’s pretty bad. I’m totally cool with all that shit getting hit with the ban-hammer. Though, this certain quote from the article worried me quite a bit. You know which bit it is, but I’ll quote it anyway.

” But the Japan branch of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) urged Tokyo to beef up its laws by banning child pornography in manga comics, animated films and computer games as well as individual possession.”

Insert argument about how fake loli porn steers pedos off real children and how outlawing it would only make things worse here. I would also insert an argument about artistic freedom, but for the most part this stuff is straight up porn. The most artistic loli-porn I’ve seen would probably be Hizashi no Naka no REAL or any loli Naruko Hanaharu draws.

But yeah, don’t outlaw our cartoon-lolis, please? It’s not really hurting anybody when some guy jacks off to an Inuboshi tankoubon.

Freak out freak out it’s Kotono Mitsuishi

Kotono Mitsuihsi is going to Animazment! Unfortunately I won’t be going since I don’t really go out of state for cons. However, I’ll probably get a buddy of mine to get an Eva DVD or something signed. Shame I won’t be able to meet her, though! C’mon Otakon, get some guests like these! A Yuuko Goto would be nice.

(In retrospect, this is the most meaningless blog entry ever)

Hey, maybe you haven’t realized? More than normal, this infatuation might really be love

Anime World Order may not want to admit it, but lolita characters and the exploitation of said characters have been part of Japanese cartoons and comics since the 1970s, and probably even further back than that. What we can all probably agree on is that at the turn of the century this exploitation became a lot more shameless and rampant– and right now in 2008, such shows have become par for the course when it comes to a season’s anime offerings.

I can’t really talk much about the manga side of things, but when it comes to modern anime, the types of lolita fanservice you get can be divided into roughly two groups: 1) Older characters who look younger than they are (your Manabi Straights and your Lucky Stars) or 2) Characters who are actually proper children and look it (your Kyou no Go No Nis and your Kodomo no Jikans). There are various ideas and thought processes that go behind the exploitation of these characters as sexual objects– in the case of number 1, the fact that they’re actually older is meant to lift that latent feeling of guilt. It almost makes it ok for one to be attracted to them, since after all, they’re 18! Number 2 is meant to cater to the more hardcore lolicon, the guys that want as close to the real thing as possible without sharing a cell with the other Miyazaki. But this entry isn’t really about that kind of stuff at all– what I want to talk about is the honesty lolita/pedo fanservice.

When I say honest loli fanservice, I mean stuff that’s true to life. In the case of number 1, this doesn’t exist at all. It’s meant to pander– pure, simple and guilt free. However, in the case of number 2, there is a degree of honesty. Not just in the fact that the characters are proper kids, but in that kids actually do talk about sex a lot.

The kinds of discussions found in Kodomo no Jikan and 5-2 are played up as lead up and/or accessories to the fanservice, but I don’t think anyone can really deny being at least interested in such things when they were younger. I remember being as young as 7-years-old when the word “sex” first made its rounds throughout the classrooms. In grades 3 through 6 we would often ponder this mysterious act and its ramifications with a great amount of interest. Shows such as KnJ and 5-2 really do a good job of bringing back this feeling of wonder and interest in things such as the idea of sex to a young kid. Probably more so with 5-2, since the sexual element in KnJ is played up more for the boners than anything else.

I’m not really saying normal people shouldn’t find such fanservice any less reprehensible, but there is something to be said in the honesty in shows such as KnJ and 5-2. Sure it’s for perverts, but it’s true! And that’s part of what I like about it.

stuff i bought this week

Monday, January 21st, 2008

I bought the first three volumes of some random manga called Gunslinger Girl. Perhaps you’ve heard of it.

The cover of the first volume is really quite sexually suggestive, and I’ve never noticed it until now. It features an adorable Henrietta blushing with a gun on her chest. Her expression makes it look as if she was just touched inappropriately, and the gun only suggests the violent means the toucher used to make her comply (actually if such a thing actually happened she’d probably just break his fingers.)

So yeah, I bought these out of frustration over how horrible the new TV show is. I’ll read them after I’m done reading other things.

僕はアブないお兄さん

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

I only really post on one forum these days, but every now and again I complete a piece of work that looks kind of ok and decide to post it on various other forums that I have posted on in the past. Back in the far off year of 2003, I posted on the Anime Academy forums for a period of time. After I figured out the place wasn’t really for me, I left, but I still popped in a few times to post bits of art in their art forum for critique. It seems they have some kind of hilarious anti-pedo sentiment now, and because of this totally harmless sig, plus a link to my art site, I am now temp-banned.

Now, I don’t really care at all. It’s not my type of community, so being shut off from it doesn’t really bother me. What I do find hilarious is how there are still anime fans out there who are genuinely bothered by those of us who have a preference for younger 2D girls. I’d think by 2008 the general American fan community would learn to accept us, given they’ve accept freaks like yaoi fangirls (and fanboys!) quite readily. Near as I’m concerned, if a dude who likes looking at pictures of 2D dudes fucking other 2D dudes is acceptable, then certainly a dude who likes pictures of 2D dudes fucking 2D little girls is acceptable. If the anime fan community is open minded enough to accept faggots homosexuals, then certainly they can open their minds to accept the far more enlightened lolicon men of the world.

It’s just funny, you know?

C73…

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

…you disappoint me. I’m searching for Hayate doujins, and as of yet none of them have been Nagi focused at all. What is wrong, C73? Where did my fellow lolicon go? Why are people drawing doujin of lesser characters? It makes no sense!

It also doesn’t help that whoever’s uploading the doujins to Share is neglecting to label what series said doujins are from, which makes searching a little difficult. JAPANNNN!!!!

Year in review post is like 75% complete. Will finish it once Ayako pushes out the last Sky Girls episode.

Kyon’s little sister

I actually have two imouto atop the computer now, along with one of my six Mikurus.

i swear i’ll stop posting shit like this and actually make an effort to make somewhat worth-while posts…

Lolitas in anime: Then and Now

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Neko-Musume, Gegege no Kitarou, 1959

nm1959.jpg

Fanart of Neko-Musume, Gegege no Kitarou, 2007

nm2007.jpg

Ok, I’m being a little unfair using fanart, but that picture is more or less a copy of the 2007 design, just in a bikini. Now, it’s not like the sexalization of lolitas is a new thing in Japanese animation. My research* shows that such sexulization has been going on since at least the 1980s! I mean, just look at the Nanako SOS opening (the DVD covers are far more damning, though) or better yet, the Tokimeki Tonight ending. Not having seen any of these I can’t vouch for how much of this content rears its head in the actual shows, but it’s clear Tokimeki Tonight influenced a couple of individuals who were responsible for the manga and anime versions of a certain series.

Now you, the ever-intrepid reader of this sinful blog may be wondering, “Why is wildarms writing this? Hasn’t he admitted to being a lolicon on numerous occasions?” This is very much true, and I am a dirty lolicon, and basically the point of this post is me wondering why exactly I’ve made such a thing public, and why the animation industry itself is coming out about something that is quite taboo. I think it’s probably because Otaku have been looked down upon as social rejects for so long, that they’ve eventually lost all shame. I mean, who needs shame when you’re the scum of the Earth? You’re free to be as sick as you want, since no one has any higher expectations of you. I’m not sure when the whole lolicon thing really exploded, but I’m guessing it’s recent. As I’ve said, the fetish has been around for a while (dating all the way back to Cagliostro? Then again, pedophiles have been around since the dawn of time, I guess) but only now is anime mostly filled with girls who look barely over 12.

The only real troubling part about all this to me is the fact that now Otaku are in the public eye. And because they are, doujin artists get arrested, shows get cancelled, and Kodomo No Jikan gets censored out the wazoo.

*research meaning going on Youtube and watching old anime openings

edit: Note that this post isn’t really serious, I’m just noting down some thoughts I had on the way to class.

On Sakura Kinomoto’s legs

Friday, March 16th, 2007

I am not a pervert. Ok, that’s a lie. I love little girls. They are so beautiful. Ms. Kinomoto is no exception. One piece of animation from the Kero 10 minute short that came with the second CCS movie caught my eye. It was a beautifully animated sequence of Sakura moving her legs in tight frilly red shorts. I nearly came. Whoever animated that is a dirty pedophile. Seriously. Just look at that detail.

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

cdJapan.com is evil. Not only do they have a fairly generous sale (generous as far as PVCs go, anyway) they get me right when I wake up, when my senses aren’t what they usually are. The result? Me spending ~160 dollars on figures I would never have bought because they were too expensive. Ugh.

Original Post

I really never meant to establish a Monday update schedule but I guess that’s just how it goes. I don’t know how to feel about this comic. The art kind of sucked, but the CGing kind of made it ok? I don’t know. On the writing end, this is another comic that is painfully true to life. I’m not sure how well it translated into the comic form. I just kind of threw it together. Hopefully you will laugh. If not, you’ll laugh at the extended Death Note parody. Yes, I know that motif is used only when the characters are deep in thought, but I had to use it. Just once. I figure whenever Rets walks into the anime store it instantly turns into Death Note land. Dunno why. Death Note is just fun to parody, I guess.
