Chillin’ at Otakon 2010

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Otakon’s been over for how many weeks? Two? Three? Four? Five? SIX?! I dunno, I haven’t been keeping count, nor do I have any concept of time. But what I do know is that this con has been over for a while, and a bunch of other cool cats already have their reports up. You should know how things run over here at Mistakes of Youth by now, so this punctuality shouldn’t be surprising.

I missed Otakon in 2009 due to being in another country while it was going on, and upon hearing reports of how fun that one was, I was actually pretty excited to get back to Otakon this year. And it wasn’t bad! Really chilled out. There were a few panels I wanted to go to–mostly run by friends and acquaintances–and between them was plenty of time to peruse the dealers’ rooms and socialize. Autograph lines were no problem, and I got to see a cool movie!

Original Post

Here is your Otakon report comic. It is 100% accurate! The big written report should hopefully be up by tomorrow… I already have some photos up: safe for work ones, and not safe for work ones.

The next comic is all drawn up, and I’m quite happy with it, so hopefully it should be up on time!

Original Post

Just a quick update before I take off for Otakon. Incidentally, if you’d like to see me at Otakon, details about doing that can be found here.

I was going to watch an episode of Strike Witches before taking off, but my computer fucked up and I ran out of time… guess I just have to watch it on the train over there!

Mistakes of Youth@Otakon 2010

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

This is more or less the same stuff I mentioned back in this news post, but it’s just good to have this stuff consolidated to one post, right? Right!

But yeah, my broke and sorry ass is gonna be creeping around the Baltimore Convention Center this weekend for the once-a-year Anime Extravaganza, Otakon. Chances are I’ll be donning my stealthy Strike Witches cap, which looks not unlike a random cap one would buy at an airshow, hence its stealth capabilities. Only people in the know can know. But if you really wanna see me 100%, I’m running a panel at this little nickle and dime show, too. It’s called The Life and Times of Akiyuki Shinbo, and if you’re not sure what the panel is about from that title, you probably haven’t been reading this blog for very long, have you! Anyway, the panel is at 9:00 pm on Saturday in Panel 4. Since there are 30 minutes between each panel, I’ll probably be fucking around with my computer 15 minutes prior to try and get my panel up and running to start at its appointed time, so if anyone wants to come and shoot the shit, you’re free to do so. I’ve gotten one email asking about the possibility of a Mistakes of Youth meet ‘n’ greet this year, and I think that’s the best it’s gonna get. I’ll probably be wearing a Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei shirt. Cospa doesn’t make one, but J-List does!

See you jokers there!

Original Post

This’ll be another short, bullet point post.

  • Otakon Coverage is complete with this comic
  • I just finished work and need to start packing up to head back to school soon.
  • Going on vacation with the family, too.
  • Taking a couple weeks off just to relax, so don’t expect a comic this week, and maybe even the week after. Once school starts I’ll get the ball rolling again.
  • Been experimenting with different kinds of styles lately… if comics look more wildly inconsistent than usual, don’t be surprised…
  • God, this backlog.

Later!

In the dark recesses of your most horrible nightmares, there lies a place called OTAKON. Fearless warriors make pilgrimage to this far-off land annually, but always come out defeated. This year is no different than the previous ones that came before, what with my fellow compatriots and I taking the challenge on once again, but this time with only VICTORY in mind. Can we do it? Harsh and Fearsome Battle At Otakon 2008

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Otakon 2008 was the best Otakon ever and the worst Otakon ever. It was the best in that I finally managed to pull off the magical balancing act of hanging out with all of my friends from various different communities for equal amounts of time, and it was the worst in that the con programming was, in a word, terrible. But who cares about all that– JAM Project was there!

But, yes, aside from JAM Project, the con’s programming was some of the worst I’ve ever seen. Much like last year, they had stupid people on panel duty, so instead of getting cool and funny panels on Nico Nico Douga, we got “How To Wear 8-Inch Heels” or “Otaku Bellydancing 101.” It’s not like I’m one for panels anyway, but the lack of good panels cut down on the urge to walk into random panel rooms late at night, as I sometimes do. The guests weren’t anything to write home about either, with none of them being female seiyuu, and almost all of them being lame fangirl bait. Or some dumb no-name models.

JAM Project saved the day with the concert, though, and it was quite awesome. I wish they would have brought their instruments along, and I also wish that the person working the sound knew a thing about sound design, but whatever– IT WAS MOTHERFUCKING JAM PROJECT.

The rest of the con (read: The Dealers Room) was pretty good, with my buddies at Hen Da Ne being all too kind to me all of the time, and the rest of of the Otaku-friendly booths offering up some hot stuff (usually too hot for my budget, sadly.) I came out of there completely broke come Saturday.

Socially, I had a blast. Like I mentioned earlier, this was the first time that I really managed to hang out with just about everyone I knew for mostly equal amounts of time. I hung out with internet people slightly more than my IRL friends, but only because I see my IRL friends a lot and my internet friends… not a lot. And really, that’s what made the con great. I even got to meet Daryl Surat!
