This post is kind of a disjointed fit of rage, so please excuse me.
It’s not so much that I’m mad at Gundam 00. I’m not one to get mad at TV shows, that’s a silly thing to do. I am however mad at people watching and liking it. This, again, is something very silly. I usually don’t get mad about things like this, but Gundam 00 is kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back. In that, it was the breaking point on a build up of rage I have towards modern anime fans for having shitty taste in general.
Gundam 00 on its own isn’t that offensive. I mean, it’s just your normal boring anime, one of many that clogs Japanese airwaves these days. I think what pushes it to moderate hate level is the clear fujoshi pandering and the absolutely horrible opening and ending numbers. What causes me to explode into FITS OF RAGE is when I read gay fanboying like this (yes, I did just call DarkMirage out. Your blog FUCKING SUCKS, by the way.) The first thing that crosses my mind is, “have these kids even seen the original Gundam?” I was one of the many kids who was first introduced to Gundam through Gundam Wing on the Cartoon Network, back in 2000 (though before then, a friend of mine had a Gundam shirt which I found very cool.) Back in those days, I thought Wing was alright, simply because it was something I just had never seen before (incidentally, ever wonder where the “heero” part of my screenname comes from?) It was probably my first robot anime, actually. However, deep down I desperately wanted to see the original. When Cartoon Network announced that they were going to air the original, I was fucking ecstatic. I tuned it right as it came on, and I’m pretty sure I was thoroughly blown away. I didn’t fully understand its true awesomeness then, but I knew it was far better than the trash I had been fed earlier (though I will admit, Wing gets good points as a comedy.)
While I was eating up good ol’ UC Gundam on the CN, a bunch of other kids weren’t watching it. Thusly, the show gets canceled, and I am left in despair. Basically, what I’m trying to get at is, why do people settle for less? Anyone with half a brain can tell that Gundam 00 is written for idiots. Why watch that when you could watch the original three movies, Zeta Gundam, and the various UC OVAs? While those all vary in quality, they are all WORLDS better than any Alternate Universe Gundam (not counting G-Gundam, since G-Gundam is AWESOME.) I guess the answer to that question is that people actually like it. This confuses me to no end. I mean, I can understand liking the Seed series as a sexy comedy, but actually taking it seriously? Give me a break.
What’s more distressing is how now-a-days I feel a lot fans simply have no grounding in anime. How many newer fans have actually sat down to watch classics like Lupin III, Ashita no Joe, Space Battleship Yamato, Cutie Honey, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, and of course, First Gundam (comedy Fist of the North Star option). I can’t say I’ve watched all of these, but by just watching of a few of those listed there, I’ve gained great insight into more modern shows and their influences. So, naturally, it bothers me when I see your average Joe anime blogger fanboying about your typical horrible anime, clearly displaying a lack of knowledge or perspective.
You know, I don’t even know where I was going with this. Actually, I’m just really mad. This is the first FIT OF RAGE I’ve had in a while. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go watch Kaiji or something…
Gundam: Serious Business
Yes.
The last fit of rage I remember having was in grade school when some kid shoved my head into a brick wall. I haven’t gotten really angry about anything since then. You should try it. Just go up to a wall and smack your head into it a few times. It’ll help calm you down.
Also, G-Gundam is what you should have suggested when I asked earlier. Maybe I’ll watch it after GitS and before I get around to Turn A.
my personal favorite is still 0083, g-gundam for close second.
i still need to watch turn a, which i assume is the last good new gundam.
i also want to play dynasty warrior gundam.
cough.
Gundam 00 indeed sucks.
That’s about all I agree with.
What I don’t get, and what you failed to explain, is your argument that having knowledge of past anime somehow bestows better taste in quality when compared to the relative newbie (and, judging by your CN comment, this is coming from someone who’s probably been watching anime long before you have).
You don’t need to weigh G00 against prior installments in the Gundam franchise to see why it sucks, much like how you don’t need to compare Gurren Lagann to Gunbuster to understand its awesomeness. The point is that the product should be judged on a standalone basis; Just because Naruto may arguably be better than DBZ doesn’t make Naruto a good show, and, conversely, just because a new Gundam title isn’t as good as the original, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s awful.
How does knowledge of past works alter a person’s ability to discern between well-written storylines and poorly constructed dribble? Substantial character development versus shallow moe fluff? Outstanding art direction versus sloppy chicken-scratch? These qualities either are or they aren’t. They don’t need to be verified by past viewing experiences.
Possessing taste of a higher standard compared to someone fanboy/girl-ing over a crappy show, is not because you’ve seen a so-called “classic”, but dependent on the ablility to perceive quality on a greater level.
I don’t know what’s your beef with DM (I haven’t even heard of him until the Nyoro~n controversy), but bashing his tastes by boasting your previous viewing history is pretty pathetic. It’s basically another way of saying, “I can’t convey why my view is better than yours in an intellectual manner, so I’m just gonna throw out names of old anime titles to intimidate you.”
It’s like two car enthusiasts arguing about the quality of a car. Person A brings up points about the engine efficiency, stylish design, comfortability, etc. while Person B goes, “Oh, yeah? Well, my opinion is more valid because I’ve driven a ’78 Buick. Take that.”
You’re making the mistake of taking this post seriously. This post was just me working off anger and trying to stir up drama.
DM just bothers me because he writes at length about shitty anime. That’s all.
You’re rant echoes me when Seed was first airing, and continuing through then. Granted I said the same thing about Lucky Star as well (and I still think it’s the most vapidly unfunny and idiotic shit I wasted time on in the past few years).
Beefy: WATCH TURN-A BEFORE I PUNCH YOU IN THE COOTER!
The only thing that made the earlier gundams good was Tomino’s influence and his willingness to fight corporate interests. Now gundam is just a brand made to sell everything under the sun, bereft of artistic values, esepcially after Turn A. You can enjoy 00 if you turn your brain off and I think that it could be good, but the glory days of gundam are over.
What was the proper way in perceiving your post then? You seemed awfully convinced that you believed what you were saying.
I dunno. This was mostly just a way for me to work off my headache, and at the same time stir up drama.
Also you seem like a very boring person who takes things entirely too seriously :(
“You can enjoy 00 if you turn your brain off and I think that it could be good, but the glory days of gundam are over.”
I can’t get past the pretty boys.
They should make a moe comedy Gundam show. I’ll be all over that.
Looks like you found me out.
If you take off the rose-tinted glasses, you’ll realise that most of the anime you mentioned were quality only in their own time. Sure, they were great back then, but people have taken those and built onto them to create better ones.
The original MSG, Zeta and all those much-lauded series are actually shit. The best Gundam is 08th MS Team and MS Igloo. The MSG laid out the world settings which the two latter series utilised.
But you need to watch better anime. Anime that isn’t anime-styled. Recently, we have had Baccano, Shigurui.
You kind of loose me in the 2nd paragraph when you say 08th MS Team is the best Gundam show, when it really isn’t. The only thing which really brings Zeta down today is the dated animation and the 80s character deisgns. The writing holds up pretty well, at least from what I can remember. I will admit First Gundam is very crunky, but it has a nice raw spirit to it. Most anime now-a-days lack spirit, period.
Also you lose all credibility bringing up Baccano and Shigurui. You need to watch better anime :V
One thing I think sets UC Gundam apart from the new stuff is this one scene. It’s when Ramba Ral blows himself up and says, “Look well, this is how a true solider dies.” You just don’t get that kind of emotion or fire anymore. First Gundam was written by people who lived through war. All these new shows are just by people who watched these cartoons when they were kids and are trying to copy them badly.
I did watch the original Gundam and Zeta and all the other short series and even Turn A.
Frankly, so-called classics are only good in the eyes of those who watched it at the right time.
Everything they achieved has been done way better since.
watched most of the shows you mentioned… and yes, Seed is a big ripof the original Gundam, who cares? It´s fun times to watch it and that is all that matters.
G-Gundam, with the hand fetish? Sucked so much I couldn´t stand it. Take the ordinary fighting anime like Dragonball and add Mecha and voila…
And why do one give a gundam a mustache? Horrible design.
Original Gundam was good, but when you just recently watched Gundam Seed it just feels like a big recap…
so sure, bitch all you want, not my busniess. But then, bitch about the show instead of people who like it. Every one has different tastes you know.
EVA is the only classic that remains enjoyable even after over a decade. Problem is, kids nowadays will think it’s shit. It’s a generation gap issue you’re facing so live with it.
Give it a few years and a certain group of people will start wondering why no one likes Gundam SEED.
>Beefy: WATCH TURN-A BEFORE I PUNCH YOU IN THE COOTER!
You could at least tell him to wear a bee-suit while watching it!
& i don’t mind Gundam 00 — though then again i’m allowed to.
Lack of appreciation for G Gundam only means you’re not man enough.
I’ll address the rest later in a cooler totally new blog post, complete with web 3.0 animated gifs.
>Also you lose all credibility bringing up Baccano…You need to watch better anime :V
You are stupid and I hate your face.
All these people saying that classics aren’t good anymore after their time has passed are fucking retards. I will now dissect their arguments.
>The original MSG, Zeta and all those much-lauded series are actually shit.
You are an idiot.
>Frankly, so-called classics are only good in the eyes of those who watched it at the right time.
You are an idiot.
>EVA is the only classic that remains enjoyable even after over a decade.
You…I have no words for you.
>WATCH TURN-A BEFORE I PUNCH YOU IN THE COOTER!
I’ll get around to it.
Hey, its not like UC didn’t have its flaws. First half of ZZ Gundam? Gundam F91? V Gundam? Not that I’m saying there’s anything as bad as Wing in the UC universe (apart from that live-action movie they did), but quite a few of the Alternate Universe stuff is better than a good deal of the UC stuff.
You mentioned G Gundam, but Turn A Gundam and Gundam X are also VERY good examples of “How to do an Alternate Universe Gundam Series”. Turn A was directed by Tomino and had the music done by Yoko Kanno so I probably don’t need to say much there, but Gundam X is seriously underrated. Hell, it even has a few references to First Gundam, and it shows what might have happened if Zeon just dropped a shitload of colonies onto Earth during the One Year War (the two sides arn’t ACTUALLY the Federation and Zeon from the first Gundam, but its still a pretty big referance.
Basicly; don’t bitch everything non-UC untill you’ve seen the Alternate Universe shows that are good. I’m kinda like you in the way that the Gundam I saw was Wing, only after that, instead of the original series, I saw SEED. And I still like the second half of it, but I agree its nowhere near as good as the First Gundam. On the other hand, although Zeta is brilliant I also think its the most overrated Gundam series bar Seed Destiny.
I agree with the comment about new fans not bothering to watch some of the older stuff. Example: I have seen many people comment on how the hood blooded manly super robot stuff in Gurren Lagann is LIEK OMG TOTALLY NEW AND ORIGINAL. You know, completely disregarding any super robot show made before it (or anything made by Go Nagai for that matter). I’m not saying that Gurren Lagann’s crap, its probably the best super robot show I’ve ever seen, but it does piss me off as well when people don’t bother watching any of the older stuff for no reason apart from maybe “ITS OLD WHICH MAKES IT CRAP” (that quote is genuine btw).
[/nerdrage]
wildarmsheero – why do you have to impose your idea of what is the true best way to enjoy anime? Everyone has different ways of enjoying an anime, be it bloggers or just viewers. Some people blog it because they like the show in general, or they like a few particular characters, or the graphics, or the seiyuu or simply how bad it is. So if Darkmirage blogs GundamOO in his style and passion, what’s wrong with that?
I am a gundam fan, hence even my nickname. All my screennames online (be it Counter-strike or Xboxlive or PSN) is related to gundam. Just like Darkmirage, I watched most of the gundam series except for Turn A and 0080. In addition, I build a lot of gundam plastic models, including every one of them from Zeta onwards. I built HG, MG and ALL OF PG versions. Let me make this clear, I am a gundam fans. But there are different ways of appreciating gundam. Every blogger has different view points and come from different backgrounds. And I do think Darkmirage’s blog is a great blog. That said, I do accept that there are people with different opinions so I won’t jump blindly to defend Darkmirage.
My point is, you can criticize Darkmirage all you want. But in the end, it just makes you look very immature.
This post wasn’t even about DarkMirage. I was just using him as an example of your typical bad anime fan.
I really don’t care what decisions people make about “the classics” versus “the new imitators”. Let’s just assume that one is clearly better than the other (as you believe, and I won’t dispute.)
Even with that assumption… Why can’t people like BOTH? Is that so wrong?
Some of the shows I like this most this season don’t hold a candle to some of my all-time favorites. So what? I was a fan of those shows before–and still am–but these are what we’re watching now. Therefore, these are what we will discuss.
Ultimately, Sturgeon’s Law applies to people to. You’ll always be outnumbered by idiots. But it’s ridiculous to fault people for liking X just because the superior Y came before it.
what’s wrong with bad anime fan? I have anime friends just go TOTALLY blind for certain genres and huge fanboyism. But what’s wrong with that? As long as the person is happy, that’s all OK. What’s wrong with bad anime fan?
AND what makes an anime fan bad?! Tell me. Does watching older “classic” shows instantly make you a good anime fan? I would have to say, a good anime fan is those who enjoys anime and respect others who have different opinions and preferences.
So the year 2000 is back in the day?
I said “back in those days.” “Back in the day” is a totally different phrase which can only be used by REALLY OLD people.
By no mean do I want to offend you but I find your post very rude. To attack people’s preferences is entirely stupid. So you don’t like Gundam 00, it doesn’t mean that everyone have to hate it too. You are right, it is stupid to be mad at a TV show and the people who watch it. You want the ‘original’ of the 1990s but those times are in the past.
I understand your conservatism but this is just not very intelligent.
(Please excuse my English)
My post is meant to be rude, genius.
Personally, It’s still way too early too judge Gundam 00 as a shitty show. I’ll give it up to at least 12 episodes before i even go as far as “This show fucking sucks”. When GSD was airing, I thought the first 10-12 episodes were great, but it pretty much went downhill after. Anything, after that is what is where i can say “It fucking sucks”. Although there is an exception in the middle and thats when Kira get defeated by Shinn.
It’s going to be long series, so I’ll give it some time :/
‘
don’t take this shit seriously people, even he admits it.
Hey, I watched most of the Lupin movies :(
And anyone even thinking of defending DM is silly. If he wants to, he can defend himself.
And it is apparent he is no good at that.
> Everything they achieved has been done way better since.
this isnt possible since all writers with actual war experience have retired and been replaced by writers with only experience of fighting over the last doujin at comiket
gundam 00 is being written by the guy who wrote the lyrics to the bottle fairy song
Personally, I’ve found Gundam 00 insofar an alright series. It hasn’t sucked, but it hasn’t been spectacular either. Personally I don’t think 5 episodes is enough time for judgement for a Gundam series of 50 episodes nor is it usually enough time for it take off. Lets examine for a moment previous Gundam series.
Gundam 0079 first 10 episodes: Random detors, boring crap.
Zeta Gundam: This one the only series in my memory that actual starts up at a decent pace. However the pace falls elsewhere (Hong Kong arc, Rosmina arc)
G Gundam: slow start, in regards to the main series.
Gundam Seed Destiny: fast start, arguably the best 10 first episodes of any Gundam series, and we all know how that turned out.
Really how a Gundam series starts is Irrelevant. The only thing that matters is how the series progresses. The only reason you aren’t giving this series a chance is that Destiny left a really bad taste in your mouth.
Nothing to say but:
CENTURIONS! POWER X-TREME!
>>gundam 00 is being written by the guy who wrote the lyrics to the bottle fairy song
I fully expect SD Gundams singing the Bottle Fairy OP.
Meh, all anime bloggers are gay (except for the females, they’re just lame). Just buy/download/steal your animes, watch in peace and STFU.
All Gundam series sucks. You want to talk about old animes? How about Astro Boy? Yeah, Astro Boy rocks. Gundam is just a pile of shit in front of Astro Boy.
There, how’s that for a rant?
The UC Gundams phail really badly at being anti-war. I only see warrior spirit stuff in them.
UC was all about the horrors of War, not this trying to create peace stuff.
UC Gundam was revolutionary considering it was made in 79. It holds up to any anime today, except in terms of animation(which is only because it hand drawn). If you’ve seen the Zeta movies, you’ll see how far animation has come, even after they cleaned up the older scenes. G Gundam was just plain funny with the occasional bad-ass moment.
But thats besides the point, UC is a classic. Gundam 00 isn’t that bad, aside from the character designs >_>. The OP and End themes are just a matter of musical preference( a friend of mine really likes the ending). But yeah 5 episodes isn’t enough time to judge a series.
The Gundam franchise has all gundam fans by the balls, and unfortunatly we will watch it no matter what, and even if you say you won’t watch this series, you’ll at the very least watch the next one.
A brief comment: people of the internet, PLEASE stop using “gay”, “fagot”, and other synonyms of “homosexual” as insults… It’s insanely common nowadays, and it drives me mad. Last I checked, we were living in the 21st century… Seriously, what the hell is this about?
shut up faggot
Lol @ e-dorama.
見とめたくない物だな、自分自身の若さゆえの過ちと言う物を。。。
You got the page hits you want now, I bet you’re wagging your tail happily.
Deep down, I’m quite sure you’d like to worship DarkMirage, after all, the opposite of love/worship is not hatred, but indifference.
Aww…….
So, an irritable guy with an inferiority complex, who predictably shouts the word “faggot” at the slightest chance… yeaaah, I’m staying out of this blog. Thank you though, for the DarkMirage reference ^^. Any blog YOU’d label as shitty is bound to be just the opposite.
this is exactly what is wrong with the internet
@noreign
A queer is you.
“Arguing over the internet is like the special olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded.”
There you go. And, as previously stated, why can’t people like both? I see nothing wrong with enjoying something due to fanboy/girl-ism. You know, you don’t use generally use your brain when watching television (shows) anyways… or so people say.
Woah, awesome rant. I’m watching 00 for the heck of it, it’s not good or bad, just mediocre it would have to be to play it safe to ensure maximum profits in this post seed world. As fer old shows vs. new, kinda depends. Sure Tomino kicks ass unbiasedly, as does stuff by tezuka and matsumoto. There’s good modern stuff now that escapes the otaku bubble (and few things can) but they are far and few between.
00 isn’t to be taken nearly as seriously as Tomino’s stuff was, at least I don’t think so. As far as i’m concerned it’s trying to hook nerds with the political mumbo jumbo and chicks with the smexy hot pilots at the same time like Seed did, so it’s pure popcorn stuff.
