Original Post

It happened kind of like this.

[22:42:56] Tatsujin: wah you should totally translate that one into Japanese for laughs
[22:43:09] wildarmsheero: if I knew Japanese

After that the guys who knew Japanese in the channel started translating it out of bordom. Here is Shingo’s translation (of the Heisei Democracy), and here is kransom’s translation (of Welcome Datacomp). Ransom’s translation isn’t very accurate at all, but I feel it really captures the spirit of the comic. And by that, I mean it’s almost all written in 2ch slang. As near as I can tell, anyway. I’ve always considered finding some way to get the comic in Japanese, but I doubt it’d garner much of a readership (according to Google Analytics I have all of 6 readers in Japan), and it’d just make me look like more of a Japanophile anyway. On to the comic itself, I’m mostly happy with the artwork. The only really problem is Rets’ hueg head in panel 3, and the layout for the last two panels. I mostly like the panel layout up to that point, but after that it looks lazy. The thing is, I wanted to put emphasis on those two images, and shrinking them so they’d fit better into the layout would lessen their impact. Who knows, maybe that abrasive panel layout helps emphasize them more. I’ll talk it over with Scott McCloud… You probably won’t get this joke if you aren’t familiar with the current slew of Hayate no Gotoku doujin coming out (it seems to be all Hinagiku…) and Japanese p2p programs with their fake files (lord knows how many times I tried to get a Kanon episode off Winny only for it to be an episode of Naruto or amateur porn.) Share works a little better for me with respect to fake files, but kransom reports often getting scat or viruses. Hence the punch line. This is probably a part 1 of 2.

Haha, oh my god

So, guys, who remembers Nanaka Crash?

I’m impressed that it remembers my old high score. The last time I went there was probably at least a year ago.

I remember I heard about this game right when I was coming to fully understand otaku culture, so it’s pretty happy memory, and a nice bit of nostalgia, despite occuring in highschool.

Who wants to play?

Long, boring and serious post on the Rebuild of Evangelion

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, recently began showing in cinemas all across Japan, and from what I can tell, the fan response has been mostly good. That said, I’ve not read much in the way of impressions, but from the three or four people I’ve spoken to, it’s mostly “the first six episodes, only prettier.” The fact that the first movie is more or less a slightly condensed version of the opening act doesn’t really bother me (what else was it going to be, anyway? It’s not like it’s going to be TOTALLY HOLY SHIT DIFFERENT from the get-go), but one thing that did have me worried was the pacing of these fims.

Hayate no Gotoku episode 22: stuff

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Hayate 22 was just like any other episode of Hayate, but it had a few very glorious moments.

To hell with you, fourth wall!

Holy shit, it’s the Gundam Lance. THE FUCKING GUNDAM LANCE.

Eva reference. JUST IN TIME FOR THE MOVIE, PERHAPS?!

:)

I wish I was holding Nagi in my arms ;(

:) :)

I want to be alone with Nagi in a boat~~

That Hayate is so daring!

Lovely delicous flat chest~

This show is a truly a man’s lolicon’s romance.

September Anime

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

As usual, taken from here.

Fansubs/Raw
Darker Than Black: Kinda getting boring again. I liked the colours/storyboarding in 19-20 though.
First Gundam: Moar plz
Hayate no Gotoku: Half way through it seems to be losing a bit of steam, but I trust it’ll be able to pick itself back up. Episode 22 was a little yashigani. All is well since it referenced the Gundam lance and Evangelion (just in time for the movie?!)
Lucky Star: Same fun light slice of life/otaku thing that it always is. A bit behind.
Otokojuku: Episode 5 was funny.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: Oh no the Shinbo curse. Episodes 7 and 8 were absolutely brilliant. I love how Shinbo can string together an episode with mostly still images.
School Days: Oh god trainwreck ahoy. Each episode is painful to watch in a good way. What?
Sky Girls: Fun, light rori/mecha romp~
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT. This is a show where people break holes in TIME SPACE. That’s all I have to say.
Zero no Tsukaima 2: Best fanservice show ever~ I love that this season is focusing on my three favourite girls :3

Stalling
Hidamari Sketch: Shinbo curse sad.gif
Negima!?: Shinbo curse sad.gif

Finished
Tenchi Muyo! TV: While uneven, a pretty great series in the end. Needed more Kiyone. Gonna watch the three movies now, and the original OVA somewhere down the line. Oh nostalgia.

Dropped
Bokura No: I may pick it back up, but I just lack the drive…
Dennou Coil: Died.
Doujin Work: No one’s subbing it, and I don’t care.
iDOLM@STER XENOGLOSSIA: May pick it back up just because, but for now it’s dropped.
Moetan: Dropped after 2 episodes
Nanatsuiro Drops: More on hold. Will continue when I feel like getting more episodes

Evangelion

HEY! THE EVA MOVIE IS SHOWING IN JAPAN RIGHT NOW! Current reviews say it’s just the first 6 episodes except prettier, which is what I’ve come to expect from the promo material. BUT HEY IT’S MORE ANIMATED EVA MATERIAL. WOO.

He’s so excited!!

[03:01:00] wildarmsheero: was it just the first 6 episodes in 90 minutes with prettier animation
[03:01:28] Shingo: more or less
[03:02:56] wildarmsheero: figured

AWESOME (mostly) ACTION PACKED ANIME NIGHT: MIT ANIME SCREENING 08/31/07

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

The reason I’m walking in at about 12:30 tonight is because for the first time ever I stayed the full length of one of MIT’s anime screenings. Tonight was movie night, with the program boasting titles such as READ OR DIE, ORIGIN: SPIRITS OF THE PAST and RIDING BEAN.

I hadn’t seen ROD in a while, so it was nice to get reacquainted with it. It was the same ridiculous super hero romp that it always was, but I find I can appreciate it the most now. The animation holds up pretty well today, still looking better than a lot of current productions, even if it is early computer animation. It’s very fluid at all times, and all the effects and such are mostly top-notch. The animation has a nice flatness about it, like Tokikake with some shading.

Origin: Spirits of the Past was a pretty bad movie. It’s like Gonzo can’t get the good writers and good animators to ever work together, ever. Like, why couldn’t they give the guy who came up with the AWESOME IDEA to have cameras blow things up write this movie? It’d be so awesome, because he’d actually have a budget to work with. Yes, this movie has MONEY behind it. I don’t know why, because the plot is so shitty and preachy, and the characters are so one dimensional and boring. The animation is stupid fluid though, but the cel shading is a little weird. It’s all softened and shit. I can see what they were going for, but it mostly doesn’t work. Also, the character designs are pretty ugly. I guess they made the characters not sexy an attempt to make themselves seem like they’re better than normal anime, which is kind of what the whole production was trying to do but failed miserably and just turned into some gay un-entertaining piece of garbage about SAVING THE PLANET. Anyway on to…

RIDING BEAN! This is one awesome piece of ’80s animation right here. I can’t even begin to tell how awesome this is. I’m starting to see why people call the ’80s the golden age, since this shit rocks hardcore, motherfucker. It has everything that makes watching TV worth it: guns, cars, cars in car chases, gore that comes out of nowhere, lolis, questionable relationships between lolis and older women, huge chins, ridiculous fast moving plots and solid as hell animation. This is what anime is made for. This, right here. I am so happy I sat through that Greenpeace shitfest just so I could watch this awesome OVA of awesomeness.

Anyway, that’s all for tonight. Catch you goofballs later.
