  • Since I was two episodes behind, I dropped Yozakura Quartet. Despite the harsh things I say about it elsewhere, it’s not an altogether bad show. The character interaction is great, but that’s not really enough to save it from its really bad plot. The show also has some slick character designs, it’s just that the bozos over at Normad can’t present them properly at all. What’s with all those dumb bright colours? Man, it’s like the only good show they’ve ever made is Chocotto Sister! *CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT*
  • I am also two episodes behind on ef – a tale of emo losers but I won’t be dropping that, even though I think the show is terribly written. It’s a SHAFT show, so I have some moral obligation to see it through. That said, the SHAFTness of it sucks, too. Shin Oonuma really is a talentless hack who is simply a mere shadow of his master. I guess the openings and endings are neat, though.
  • To Aru Majutsu no Index has finally come out of its funk and is entertaining again. The latest arc wasn’t especially great, but it was fun and lacked the menacing walls of text that plagued the first six episodes. The show still needs to bring in more of the girls, but I guess Index is enough for now~
  • Michiko and Hatchin is a really great show, and I should write a longer entry about it eventually. What sets it apart from the rest is its film/TV drama like nature. The directing is that of a live action piece, and never feels too cartoony. However, I do think the direction falters in some areas, but we can forgive Sayo Yamamoto for that, right?
  • Speaking of me missing images on Danbooru, how did I miss this (very not safe for work) work of art? This is the best piece of Mikuru porn I’ve seen in a while, and every naked picture of Mikuru I have is amazing.
  • So I guess that Touhou anime has a cast of real voice actors. My Touhou-Fuhai is still weak, but this seems pretty cool.
  • I don’t really mind the art in ChäoS;HEAd, but I guess I’m speaking as someone who draws worse than that.

Current
Casshern Sins: Great art direction but the writing is so boring. I’m pretty sure Casshern says JUST WHAT AM I in every fucking episode.
ChäoS;HEAd: It’s always super special! I like this one a lot.
Clannad ~After Story~: Hit and miss. Needs more Mei and/or baseball episodes.
ef – a tale of melodies: This is like a Shinbo show except not good.
Ga-Rei-ZERO: I mostly like it. Really dig the opening/ending tunes.
Golgo 13: ….
Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae: It’s like the writers on this show compete on who can write the crappiest episode.
Kannagi: Yamakan’s direction is great, and the production values are flawless, but the plot stuff lets it down.
Kemeko DX: Nice tits. Humour is hit or miss.
Kurogane no Linebarrels: This show is about man things like robots, tits and giant black men named JACK SMITH who cut airplanes in half.
Kyou no 5 no 2: I guess it’s fine but I still don’t know any of the character’s names.
Michiko to Hatchin: Uneven, but on the whole extremely well done.
Rosario + Vampire CAPU2: This show has moments of genius, actually. Moments of genius mixed with many moments of utter stupidity.
Shikabane Hime: Aka: This show is incredibly trashy, but it takes itself so seriously that I can’t help but take it seriously too. Gainax’s work also really helps it.
Tentai Senshi Sunred: Mostly funny. Some moments fall flat, but mostly funny.
To Aru Majutsu no Index: Pretty entertaining fluff after a string of terrible opening episodes. Let’s hope it stays this way!
Toradora!: I really like this, even though I can’t find a character to like. Taiga is almost cute, but she’s too violent.
Tytania: :V
Yozakura Quartet: This has a really shitty plot, but the direction is ok. Good voice acting, too.
Zettai Karen Children: Not as good as Hayate, but a thoroughly enjoyable year-long show.

Not Current
Windy Tales: Finishing this soon.

Reading
Hayate no Gotoku: Comic version is pretty good so far, but Kenjiro Hata is kind of a bad artist but works around his failings well.
Ikoku Meiro no Croisee: What? There’s only one volume so far? It’s been a year! Where’s volume two :(

I guess I’ll read more of the Tsukuyomi manga soon.

Comic Site Rant: “Real women are gross.” “Some of them have subtle facial hair and stuff.”

Original Post

I watch Clannad, and after I’m done with an episode, it usually doesn’t leave much of an impression me. The show isn’t bad, it just doesn’t really resonate with me like it does with others. That’s why I was surprised when I just randomly thought up this comic. Usually when coming up with comic ideas, I have to run through all the shows I’m watching and try to pick out potentially funny aspects of them to make into comics. When I came upon Clannad, this idea popped up without much thought. And I like it. Yes, I like it. Maybe I just like it because I’m using Angryblue brushes for the first time since highschool, but I still like it!

This comic didn’t involve much art, but overall I like how everything turned out. The linework is ok, but after I cleaned it and coloured it I came to not hate it. I think I did a decent job of emulating KyoAni’s overdone lighting for the Illusionary World panels, and the last panel is my best Yasuhiro Yoshiura impression. I may continue to light comics like that, even though I’m totally ripping him off. I’ll keep doing it until I realize I can never be as cool as the dude who made Pale Cocoon and Eve no Jikan. Anyways, me actually liking something I made must be a sign of the apocalypse. If anyone sees Four Horsemen on their way to work or something, It’s probably my fault.

Two podcasts went up over the past month. First one is this Macross Frontier podcast I did with The Internet’s Daryl Surat. I meant to post about this on the main site the week it came out, but I got distracted by Election Day and forgot. Anyways, it’s a good show. I’m pretty quiet, but that’s fine since Daryl knows a lot about Macross and will educate you good. The next one is a show that went up just yesterday about Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu. The guests this time around are TV’s Jeff Lawson and The Internet’s omo. It’s a pretty silly show, but Haruka is a silly anime, so it all works out.

Gankutsuoh is growing less and less interesting as it progresses. I really don’t care about any of the characters anymore, and as a result I don’t really care where the plot is going either. The characters that aren’t the Count/aren’t affiliated with the Count are all dumber than School Days characters, and less sympathetic than them as well. Maybe it’ll get better in the last four episodes. At least this isn’t as bad as Romeo x Juliet, though.

ChäoS;HEAd, however, is still impressive five episodes in. This is a momentous feat, considering its concept sets itself up for failure really easily. The animation is a little bad, but it makes up for it with pretty strong writing. Not an episode goes by where stuff doesn’t happen. It is almost the most enjoyable part of my week, if the most enjoyable part of my week wasn’t Zettai Karen Children. Or Michiko to Hatchin.

Kodomo no Jikan has been meandering a lot lately, but I still like it. Though, when each new chapter hits the pipes, I slowly begin to understand why Seven Seas pulled the plug on its release. When they first announced their cancellation of the title, I had only read the first four or so volumes, which are–for the most part–not that bad. I was slightly annoyed, but figured it was ultimately a good business decision. But upon looking at the latest chapters, I have no idea how this could have survived in the US market without there being lawsuit after lawsuit fired in Seven Seas’ direction. For instance, try figuring out how to localize this joke, and then having the balls to put it in a US bookstore. Nevermind the fact that later on in that chapter Rin discovers that there is more to her special place than just going to the bathroom. They should just put this in a lolicon anthology and be done with it! However, if this did get a US release, it’d totally be a step in the right direction, and would hopefully open the doors for many other lolilicious titles to be brought over. I’m looking at you, Lolicon Phoenix!

Aaaaand, that’s all for this week. I have no homework this weekend, so I’m just going to chill. Later.

Current
Casshern Sins: Arty retro stuff. Sometimes boring, but mostly good.
ChäoS;HEAd: Moe psychological thriller. I can dig it.
Crannad ~After Story~: The first arc was great, but now it’s getting into “NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN, KEY” territory.
Detroit Metal City: Hahahaha, the rapping episode.
ef – a tale of melodies: Behind on this already.
Ga-Rei -Zero-: I dunno. Kinda good.
Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae: Lesbians send you to hell.
Kannagi: JIMI, DA NE. The opening is almost the best part of this show, but the real stuff is mostly good. I wish Nagi and Jin would argue less. It’s not funny like when Kohei and Hazuki do it.
Kurogane no Linebarrels: This show is just funny.
Kyou no 5 no 2: Not as good as the porno OVA, but decent. Kind of boring at times.
Michiko to Hatchin: SASSY, CRASSY, ASSY. Need more episodes~
Rosario + Vampire Capu2: You know those people who hate 0nT but watch it anyway? That’s how I am with this damn show.
Shikabane Hime: Aka: On hold because of FUNimation faggotry. I like it, though.
To Aru Majutsu no Index: Hey let’s talk for 30 minutes then make something exciting happen at the end of the episode only for the following episode to be more talking. This show needs to be fixed soon.
Toradora!: I think I love it. Such great character stuff here.
Tytania: I almost love it. Too gay, though.
Yozakura Quartet: I feel the Kurenai magic every now and again, but overall not that great. Good ending song, though.
Zettai Karen Children: Absolutely Lovely! That’s why it doesn’t lose!

Not Current
Gankutsuoh: Pretty good except all the characters who aren’t the Count are dumb cunts.
Mushishi: Pure brilliance.
Windy Tales: Almost pure brilliance.

Manga
Slowly reading through some manga in both Japanese and English.

Fall 08 Impressions PART VI

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Fall season review comes to a dangerously GORY, SASSY and FABULOUS end.

ChäoS;HEAd

Holy social commentary Godman! Talk about engrossing. This was almost the most gripping first episode of the season just short of Ga-Rei-Zero. The real selling point for this one is that the main character is an otaku, a development I so totally wasn’t expecting. To make it better, he’s all sorts of kimoi. Not a lolicon, though. A pity.

I’m being cautiously optimistic with this one, though. Don’t be distracted by Madhouse’s name in the opening credits, because Imagin’s name IS RIGHT UNDER IT. If we start seeing ball-shaped cabbages, I’m dropping this one.

Michiko to Hatchin

This show’s promotional material promised SASS, CRASS AND ASS, but this first episode was mostly CRASS with a side of ASS and SASS. We do get a lot fun things like jailbreaks, gunfights and general chaos in this opener, but a majority of this episode was spent laying down the backstory for the loli side of this show. Which is totally fine, since it really helped develop her character, and the end of this first episode promised more SASS, CRASS AND ASS so I’m not complaining.

I want to mention the opening sequence, because it’s an absolutely classy piece of work. Not quite the Cowboy Bebop level of awesome, but it does reach the quality of a SHAFT opening, but instead of tickling otaku sensibilities, it plays out like an animated album cover from some 1960s record.

Tytania

Most people regard Legend of the Galactic Heroes as one of the greatest anime space operas ever made. I’ll just take their word for it for the time being, seeing as I have no time to hack through 100+ episodes of men telling their giant fleets to SURROUND THE ENEMY AND FIRE WHEN THEY’RE WITHIN RANGE. Instead I’m watching Tytania, a slightly shorter story by the same guy. This first episode was very much what I imagine any given LotGH episode is like, so in that respect it didn’t disappoint. However, I’m not sure of how long I can handle guys sitting around telling other guys to shoot at stuff.

Also the ending song for this show is horrible

And that’s a wrap! The only two things I missed this time were Jigoku Shoujo 3 and Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. The former because no one has subbed it and the latter because I don’t believe it’s available yet. Shame about JS3, though. That series looked like it actually had a plot this time around.
