The Fierce War of 2008: The Forgotten Ones
Posted On January 2, 2009
In any given anime season, there are a select few shows you start on, but somewhere along the line they get lost in the shuffle. It is sometimes due to one having too much on their plate, or it can be due to slow release schedules. There are also shows that you start on that you may totally hate, or just are just indifferent towards, that you drop. This post is devoted to those forgotten shows, both the lame ones and the pretty good ones.
Dropped
- Allison and Lillia, C-: What really hurts Allison and Lillia is that its coat of NHK-for-the-family paint is on way too thick. It has potential to be a neat adventure show, but instead it just aspires to be a lame kids cartoon. I never even made it to the Lillia part.
- Natsume Yuujinchou, C: Brains Base is very hit or miss with me. This one missed. Too girly and boring.
- Telepathy Shoujo Ran, C: The three episodes I saw of this were real quality kids show, but unfortunately I dropped it due to sporadic subs, and the show not being all that great. As a kids show it’s fine, but if I can’t watch it weekly, I don’t really care.
- Yozakura Quartet, C+: Every time this show deals with its plot, it sucks. Every time it doesn’t, it’s great. It gets too plotty at around episode nine, so I dropped it. Kou Matsuo should hang around Brains Base more instead of Normad.
Shows On Hold
B Rank
- Golgo 13, B+: Golgo 13 delivers a good Adult Story without fail each week, and I always eat it up even if it’s ridiculous or just plain dumb. It’s a shame people stopped subbing it.
- Slayers Revolution, B+: My first Slayers experience was with Revolution, and I really liked the six episodes I watched. Subs grew scarce, so I stopped. The next time I watch it will probably be after I marathon through all the other Slayers shows.
A Rank
- Tetsuwan Birdy Decode, A: Sadly, I only got around to two episodes of Tetsuwan Birdy Decode. However, I liked what I saw. It’s a great a science fiction action piece, with lots of nice animation. I’ll watch it along with its second season eventually.
Next Time: DARK SHADOWS OF THE PAST! THE DANGEROUS YEAR THAT WAS…2007!!

I sadly did the same thing with Birdy Decode myself. It mainly because of my starting college though, something that stopped me from finishing a lot of shows from the Summer (I never did finish Frontier either).
I could almost copy this list for myself, since I agree on most accounts, though I finished Birdy. It ends up being a lot different than what it first seems, in good and very bad ways.
birdy decode is pretty good. try watching the other episodes on veoh or downloading them. cant wait for the 2nd season.
frontier is really good, one of the top anime for 08. high recommended that u find a way to go watch it =D
I’ll cover Macross Frontier soon. Just you wait.
If you liked Revolution, you’ll like any of the other seasons. It’s a solid return to the classic Slayers style of comedy, and fairly representative of the series as a whole.
I was once invited to a D&D gaming session in college. I’d never played D&D before, and had just marathoned the first Slayers season the week before and it was fresh on my mind. The DM took his gaming seriously. Needless to say, I was not invited to a second session.
I’m still calling Macross-F my favorite of ’08 and already on my top 5 of all time :D
Yozakura Quartet plot was shit, but the ending was satisfying in a way. The only thing that kept me going was the character design. I kind of hope for a second season or at least a plot free OVA, but I don’t find this likely.
BAHDI only starts good, and has one or two good action scenes later on. Not really worth finishing unless the second season kills off Senkawa.

In what way exactly? Still, I liked the show enough to finish it, but mostly beacause it had Kotoha in it.
