Shaft is truly great only half the time. Most of it greatness is well exploited moe and loli that essentially sell the show and/or save it being dull. Being that it is a visuals powerhouse, for Shaft its not so contemptible, but does prevent anyone that is not subject to these draws to justly underrate it from their perspective.

Let me also say that Shaft is my personal favorite production studio (partially because loli and moe are staples in my anime diet), but sometimes their pacing is a little off. (ef staggered in the beginning, but is turning out great - especially after the visual awesome kicked in at episode 7).

cowboy bebop is “BONES” in people’s mind because of the team, and Yoko Kanno, of course

and Anno is a writer + ex-suicidal. So Shinji more or less is a projection of his state

and I missed witty dialogues in anime. Zeta has mature, real-like dialogues… cowboy bebop kicked with style in words, oh the glory of 90’s

maybe sunrise should hire a tv-series writer, or have j.j. abrams direct an anime lol

If you really want to sell me on a show (/book/game/whatever), casually mention that it’s pretty good and wait for me to get into it myself. Then, if I love it, I’ll tell you it was OMG MAXIMUM WIN WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME HOW MUCH THAT ROCKED.

I dunno I thought eva was more “amazing start to finish with a few speedbumps” then either of those. Yeah TTGL is a really cool show but it’s not my favorite gainax production (I liked FLCL and EVA alot more) As for Eureka 7 that was a good show but I wouldn’t call it crazy awsome. Guess it all comes down to opinion there.

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door was pretty good too, but it’s fucking Cowboy Bebop. In order to make that suck, you would have had to remove all of the Bebop, as well as most of the Cowboy.

I haven’t seen any of the rest, though from what I gather FMA falls into the same “overrated show with lots of fanboys who WON’T SHUT UP” category as Naruto and Suzumiya Haruhi.

I would also like to say I have nothing against BONES, I judge my anime based on merit, not studio.

To me anime like E7 and DMA just aren’t that good, they aren’t bad per se, they just are not as good as every damned fool and his dog seems to think.

Everyone seems to respect and venerate these anime exponentially more than they deserve based on their merits.

It’s treating a three-star performance like a five-star, criminal in my opinion.

One Piece is ok, and I can’t speak for Jojo. There certainly will be exceptions, but most things in there suck.

I’m kind of being over the top about my devotion to Eva for comedic effect, but is my favourite show. I hardly judge everything by it, mostly because there is nothing else like Eva, so comparing every anime I watch to it would be silly. I don’t really care how much or how little it contributed to otakudom as a whole (though it did change things a lot, probably more so than your two examples regardless of their quality) it’s just my personal favourite.

As for not reading anything in Shonen Jump after 1995, for shame, you’re missing out One Piece and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Series 5, which are beyond awesome.

Also, if you judge everything with Evangelion as your holy grail (kinda stereotypical even for you) you’re never gonna be satisfied by anything ever again. Granted I myself love Eva, but I realize it’s mostly Anno Bullshitting and watch it mainly for the silly entertainment, not as some holy grail of Japanese animation masterpiece, which in my opinion Oshii’s works like Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer and Patlabor 2 did more for anime as a whole than Evangelion ever did; granted I still think Angel’s Egg is his best work ever.

Eureka Seven is better than Eva, and almost as good as Gurren-Lagann (only lacking that one factor of OMG FUCKING WIN that makes TTGL the best show evar) It’s right under G-L though as my alltime favorite.

About the bones stuff.. well the only show decent enough in my opinion was Eureka 7 and they screw up with darker than black.

But with Eva I guess it’s kind of a nostalgia thing too, since it’s one of the first things I ever saw as an impressionable 12 year old. It still holds up pretty well today, too. I don’t really know why people get stuck on the religious symbolism. It’s not really good or bad so much as it is just there. Crosses do look cool, though.

The thing with Eva is it came from an era where anime still wasn’t afraid to just be a total dick to everyone involved. The story keeps plunging itself further and further into the pits of the despair, and I absolutely love it. A lot of anime these days doesn’t really do that and insists on being nice to its characters. This is probably why I love trainwreck affairs like School Days.
