You're right, it definitely led the watcher to be able to feel some regret that Light's life had been cut short by the whole Death Note gamut, and sympathize with his humanity. Of course, there's nothing wrong with the Manga...Light just went down pleading and screaming like a coward, which didn't do much for final impressions. I guess the Manga version is more about what *did* happen, while the Anime ending focuses on what could have been but was lost. So at least after his death a lot of people still treated him like a God. Other than that, he pretty much got fucked.
