Well, the Kanon characters aren't based on cliches so much as they created the cliches. Kanon is a bit like Mobile Suit Gundam in the sense that it transformed its genre, and then shows/games afterwords followed suit, so in retrospect it comes off as "cliche."

The drama in Kanon is far deeper than what you expect, I guess. Each of the girls' stories are really out there and unique. Either that, or they're tragic in a very over the top way. If you ever watched Air, you should know what to expect.

Also, about Ayu no knowing what a cellphone is, that's... a hint about her backstory :3

Well, I can clearly see Kanon 2006 turning out to be very melodramatic near the end but in my opinion good drama does not only consist of broken promises and lost memories but has to rely on believable characters (like in Noein or The Place Promised Us). And the girl characters in Kanon 2006 are based on clichés and very artificial (what 16 year old girls goes around saying Uguu or Auuu and not knowing what a cellphone is?).

On NHK: I wouldn't mind if the inconsistencies in the art were intentional, but I know they aren't. This is clearly the result of a production that's not being supervised well enough. Also, given NHK is grounded in reality, I'd things to be kept consistent for the sake of realism. Different art-styles between episodes works in something like Paranoia Agent, but not NHK.

On Kanon: Dullness? Try out the original Toei version. The slice of life episodes in that one dragged far worse. KyoAni inserted more life into all of the characters, making what was once a snore fest into something quite enjoyable and I'm loving it all.

I didn't really expect you to like Kanon, given your tastes. In the end, the show is really just made for fans of the original game, so its appeal is limited. I'd say stick with it if you're a fan of good romance driven drama, though. There should be a lot of it on the way.

I haven't commented on the last one so I´ll do it here.

Both new Funimation-related comics are quite good concerning the art. It is nice to see you experimenting with angles and perspective. I hope you´ll do this more often in the future.

Different NHK ni Youkoso animation styles; I think, it´s good to have different styles in a show (like in Magical Shopping Arcade) because it is more enjoyable then. It only bothers me that the animation was really bad in the first half of the show.

Jigoku Shoujo 2; I´ll wait for enough good ratings from the fan community before I watch the second season. I mean, seeing the same story scheme 23 times in the first season I am not so eager on additional all-the-same short stories without a coherent plot for the series.

Kanon 2006; well, I am not that fond of KyoAni´s new work. I think they severely overdid the dullness-factor this time and the story goes nowhere. I mean, Kyon (haha) is an interesting and original character but you can forget all the girls. They just seem rather stupid and worn out.
Let´s wait for Haruhi II.

I still haven`t listened to the latest podcast but I´ll definitely do it soon enough.
Good luck at college.
